Pupil Voice

 School Council

At Turvey Primary, we believe that a pupil's voice is central to creating a school community where every child feels valued and empowered. Through our School Council, children have a meaningful opportunity to share their ideas, contribute to decision-making and influence positive change within the school. We are committed to listening to our pupils and ensuring that their perspectives help shape the learning environment and experiences we provide.

As part of our commitment to promoting British Values and teaching about democracy, our School Council plays a vital role in representing the voices of all students across the school. Each class is represented by council members who are dedicated to driving forward improvements that matter most to their peers.

In previous years, the school council have led changes on the following elements of school life:

  • Developing our playground Rules.
  • Improvements to the playground equipment.
  • Review and selection of our school values.

Each year, pupils are invited to put themselves forward as a candidate for either the School Council or Eco-council and encouraged to give a presentation on why they should be chosen. Their class members then vote through a ballot and their representative for both councils is selected based on a democratic vote.

The School Council meets once a month with Miss Savage to discuss new initiatives, reflect on current projects and raise issues that matter to their classmates. These regular meetings ensure that all pupils have a voice in the life of the school and play an active role in making Turvey Primary the best it can be.

 Eco-Council

The Eco Council plays an important and influential role at Turvey Primary School, helping to shape our commitment to sustainability and care for the environment. Each class is represented by a dedicated member from Year 1 through to Year 6, ensuring that every pupil has a voice in how we look after our school and wider community.

Behind the scenes, our Eco Council members work hard to encourage their peers to make positive choices, whether that’s reducing energy use, minimising waste, recycling responsibly or finding new ways to make our school more environmentally friendly. Through these efforts, they help Turvey Primary to become more energy-efficient, sustainable, and environmentally conscious for the future.

Being part of the Eco Council also gives children the chance to build confidence, develop leadership skills, and take pride in making a real difference. By representing their classmates’ ideas and working together, they ensure that everyone contributes towards making our school the very best it can be.

 Roles include:

  • Ensuring lights, taps, whiteboards are off in each class when not being used
  • Promoting recycling throughout.
  • Looking after and preserving the school grounds.
  • Arranging litter picks.
  • Reducing the use of paper in school.

The Eco Council meets once a month with Miss Savage to explore new environmental initiatives, review ongoing eco-projects, and raise ideas or concerns shared by their classmates. These regular meetings give pupils the opportunity to actively contribute towards making Turvey Primary a greener, more sustainable school, while ensuring that everyone has a voice in caring for our environment and shaping a better future.
