Sport & PE

Our Intent for PE

At Turvey Primary we believe that Physical Education, experienced in a safe and supportive environment is a vital contributor to a pupil’s physical development and well-being. It is therefore our intention to provide an inclusive, broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum. This will ensure all children will access and benefit from learning and enhancing new skills. From this, pupils should demonstrate a good understanding of the importance of physical activity and how to lead a healthy lifestyle, physically and mentally. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their personal best and thrive for success as ambitious learners.

In order to embed life long values, we teach the children how to cooperate and work collaboratively as part of a team. We believe that participation is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are introduced to a range of new sports, clubs, inter-school competitions and sports festivals. Not only does this link with our school’s values of teamwork, co-operation and respect but also the school games values, which we incorporate within our lessons.

Implementation of the Curriculum

High-quality Physical Education lessons are taught twice a week, covering four different sport/skills per term. We follow the Physical Education overview to ensure all pupils participate in a variety of sports, covering the National Curriculum objectives. Our Physical Education curriculum is sequenced, using The Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work for PE. The consistency of the planning and resources ensure lessons across years show progression, allowing children to further develop advanced skills required in all areas of the curriculum.

We work closely with our local Sports Partnership. Pupils who are in Years 1-6 participate in three sports festivals a year, competing against other local schools. Swimming is taught in addition to this for Years 2, 3 and 4. The Physical Education Curriculum extends beyond the school day with a varied selection of extra-curricular clubs that are offered during each term, before and after school, giving all pupils the opportunity to participate.

Throughout the year, children have many opportunities to engage in sports enrichment activities, such as Bike Ability, the daily Golden Mile challenge, Creative Arts Festival and Outdoor Education experiences. Annually, the school celebrates ‘Healthy Living Week’ to educate and promote a healthy lifestyle and physical activity. Children engage in various workshops with inspirational individuals and participate in a range of activities and sports. During the summer term, we hold a competitive sports day, where the children represent their sports houses and take part in a variety of races that are accessible to all. An overview of the curriculum for each particular class can be found on the class page of the website.
