Humanities

Our Intent for Humanities

We want our pupils to have a natural curiosity about the world around them; to ask questions and further their understanding of the past and the present, the environments and the processes that create them in their own locality in Turvey, Bedfordshire, and the wider world. Children aren’t simply ‘taught’ history and geography, they explore it for themselves.

Part of becoming an engaged historian is learning how to glean information from evidence in the form of both primary and secondary sources and learning to ask questions for themselves. We also want them to have a sound understanding of chronology when linking different topics.

We want our geographers to develop a holistic appreciation of how the world works and of the interconnections between concepts such as cultural diversity, interdependence, and sustainability.

Our learning in humanities enriches understanding across all subjects from science to art and design.

Implementation of the Curriculum

We have a rich and engaging topic-based curriculum, which allows us to teach History and Geography through exciting lessons and projects throughout the school. Our learning is enriched by visitors to the school, theatre productions, and school trips which support the children in their learning.

In Key Stage 1 the children begin to acquire an understanding of chronology and their place in history. They learn about some key historical events and figures. They begin to use historical vocabulary relating to the passage of time.

Pupils develop knowledge about the world, the United Kingdom, and their locality. They are introduced to basic subject-specific vocabulary relating to human and physical geography and begin to use geographical skills, including first-hand observation, to enhance their locational awareness.

In Key Stage 2 the children take on more in-depth studies of particular time periods in world history. They use their skills of enquiry to make deductions and to evaluate historical evidence.

Pupils extend their knowledge and understanding beyond the local area to include the United Kingdom and Europe, and North and South America. This will include the location and characteristics of a range of the world’s most significant human and physical features. They will develop their use of geographical knowledge, understanding, and skills to enhance their locational and place knowledge.
