Music

Our Intent for Music

At Turvey Primary we recognise the valuable role music has in self-expression, self-confidence, social understanding,
and the development of fine motor skills. We aim to foster children’s natural creativity and curiosity, exploring five
key skill areas: singing, playing, improvising, composing and listening. In all year groups, the children love using the
broad selection of tuned and untuned percussion and woodwind.  In Years 3 -6 they have the opportunity to play our full-class set of ukuleles, as well as making use of iPads and computers for composition projects.

Singing is a key feature in our whole-school assemblies.   Years 3 & 4 take part in Bedford Borough’s Sing On performance every other year. There are regular performance opportunities throughout the year for both soloists and groups, and provision for extra-curriculum instrumental lessons. Our school choir meets once a week before school and is an incredibly vibrant and open environment for anybody with an interest in singing.

Implementation of the Curriculum

At Turvey Primary, the children are taught music as a class once a week, following the school curriculum map for
music, which can be seen below. The units of work are based on the National Curriculum and make use of 'Kapow' for R, 1 & 2, while Year 3 - 6 are taught by a visiting specialist music teacher. The curriculum has been carefully planned in order to ensure progression of knowledge and skills. As well as beingassessed by their teachers, children are regularly encouraged to self-assess and provide constructive feed-back to one another.
