Our Intent for RE 

At Turvey Primary we recognise that the place of religion in the modern world can be controversial and challenging. Therefore, we believe it is vital for our school to help our pupils to develop their own ideas and ways of living, to learn to be reasonable about belief and religions and to learn to be respectful to those who see the world differently, so that they may go on to become good citizens in the future. The three-fold aim for the RE curriculum looks to ensure that all pupils can:

1. Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs.

2. Understand the impact and significance of religious and non-religious beliefs and

3. Make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts, practices and ideas studied.

The RE curriculum drawn up by the SACRE, (Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education) ‘shall reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain’. Contemporary guidance from the government makes clear that the breadth of RE will include the six principal religions in the UK, and non-religious worldviews.

Implementation of the Curriculum

At Turvey Primary we assign five per cent of our curriculum time for RE (which equates to an hour a week), based on national guidance. The teaching of RE may vary from year group to year group, with some units being taught as a weekly lesson over a half term or as a series of RE days. The units of work will follow the school curriculum map for RE which can be seen below. These units of work aim to develop and build on previous knowledge and are based on the local SACRE’S  Curriculum. The curriculum has been carefully planned to ensure progression of knowledge and skills relevant to each year group over the course of study and is designed to help the children to remember in the long term the content they have been taught and to integrate new knowledge into larger concepts.
